A Fairly Odd Review Series: Season 0, Episode 3: “Where’s The Wand?”

‘Where’s the Wand?’ is…okay. This short is a case where I like the concept more than I like the execution. It’s certainly not absent of creative or charming moments, but the overall product isn’t all that great.

The short features Vicky getting ready to go to a school dance after a day of babysitting Timmy, and through happenstance, Wanda’s wand ends up getting in her hands as she’s unaware of the powers it has. A fun concept on paper, and to be fair, I really like all the Vicky stuff. Because Vicky doesn’t know what the wand is doing, her bewildered reactions to all her wishes coming true are pretty humorous, and it leads to some amusing visual comedy as well.

It’s when the protagonists are involved that there are some problems.

The beginning features Timmy acting oddly jerkish to Cosmo and Wanda because of them not doing the pirate fantasy exactly right. It was pretty jarring to have him sarcastically diss them for Wanda screwing up her eyepatches, even more so since this behavior disappears afterward.

While Cosmo and Wanda are trying to get the wand back, Cosmo’s attempt features him transforming into a handsome human adult and trying to woo Vicky to the point of fainting. It’s, uh…borderline creepy, and Wanda’s attitude towards him afterward doesn’t exactly help. I’ll give their stuff this, though. Cosmo and Wanda dancing together was pretty charming and adorable. Despite that odd Vicky moment, they’re established to basically be #CoupleGoals, and it still managed to put a smile on my face.

The short is definitely far from perfect, and is the weakest so far in terms of story and comedy. But there are still some enjoyable moments that make it worth at least a watch. I do have to wonder why this wasn’t given a Tara Strong re-dub, but that’s a topic for later.
