A Fairly Odd Review Series: Season 0, Episode 8: “Scout’s Honor”

I wouldn’t expect this particular review to have much substance or insight, because the short itself is just…okay. It mainly suffers from being a bit too unfocused and slapdash in terms of the story, but it was enjoyable enough where I can say I’m glad I saw it.

This short introduces the fact that Timmy is part of the Squirrelly Scouts, and his goal here is to get the badge for capturing a mythical creature, specifically Bigfoot, helped by Cosmo and Wanda giving him special glasses that make him see a hidden land full of mythical creatures. Meanwhile, Vicky, established to be part of the Cream Puff Scouts, is angry from being forced to work, and so tries to terrify the Squirrelly Scouts for a kick.

Aside from the ending, there’s no real intersection between the two plots, and the short runtime doesn’t lend itself well to this kind of structure. It could have been helped by maybe a couple extra minutes. It’s not like either of these plots are complex by any means, but it would have served to make the short not feel as clumsy as it is.

The Vicky plot in particular suffers from this. Soon after she concocts her scheme and one embarrassing moment, she gets confused for Bigfoot and taken to a museum. Funny ending, for sure, but it’s also something that could have been saved for another short dedicated to her.

But the short isn’t without merit; the mythical land is aesthetically pleasing, Cosmo and Wanda gets some solid jokes in, and the ending is funny, like I said. But the highlight is the fact that when they find Bigfoot…he turns out to be a hippie. Like, groovy bus, spaced out way of talking, totally at peace, the whole shebang. That reveal alone was hilarious, and the fact that “hippie Bigfoot” is a thing that exists here just makes it that much funnier.

Overall, the short is fine. If it restricted itself to just one of its plots or at least had more runtime, this could have been genuinely good. As it is, it’s a fun mess, but still a mess nonetheless.
