AFORS: S0 E10: “Super Humor”

By this point, “The Fairly OddParents” had effectively established itself as a form of escapist fantasy; the kind of fantasy that kids can watch in order to think about an ideal scenario, one where all their wildest dreams can become a reality. In that respect, ‘Super Humor’, of all the shorts, is the one that’s “FOP” in its purest form, and it’s one of the best ones because of that.

The concept of this one is arguably the simplest one thus far. Timmy is excited about superheroes, and so he wishes to become one. But because there are so many types of superpowers out there, he takes this as a chance to experiment with all the ones he’d most like to have.

This short‘s main focus is the slapstick comedy that results from Timmy’s superpowers, and as far as I’m concerned, it’s generally very effective. The jokes that come out of things like Timmy’s flight or super strength are just the right level of cartoony, and they’re very well-timed as well. Plus, this is a case where the shorter runtime is used to its advantage; it doesn‘t feel like it goes on for too long, and the story is just simple enough that it didn’t really need to go that long.

A highlight is the visual gags the short pulls off. Of course, we have Timmy’s normal head on a buff body, and having that kind of image alone is quite hilarious.

Oh, and if you’re wondering where that image of Timmy looking like a cat came from, here you go, it’s from this short.

And yes, it is just as jarring as you would think it is.

‘Super Humor‘ is just plain fun from start to finish. It’s not particularly excellent in terms of plot, but it doesn’t really need to be. Check this out if you’re in for a good laugh.

And folks, that’s it for season 0! Next will be a general overview of the season, giving us time to really digest this appetizer before we get to the main course: the official series.
