AFORS: S1 E4b: “Apartnership!”

Ah, after all this time, we get to have a segment focusing on Cosmo and Wanda’s relationship, and as far as the first attempt goes, it’s very solid all around. It demonstrates the strength of their romance while introducing a couple of fun new characters that add a little bit of extra flavor to it.

Due to a miscommunication involving their anniversary, Cosmo thinks that Wanda’s mad at him and doesn’t want anything to do with him anymore, and so he leaves and moves back in with his mother who has a serious grudge against Wanda. Cosmo and Wanda do bicker a little, but once Timmy reigns them in, their relationship is tested with a fairy dating game show.

One thing I really appreciate about the set-up is the fact that both parties are at fault here, and it all can’t be blamed on just one person. Cosmo failed to realize that he got the anniversary wrong, and Wanda had a little too much confidence in his knowledge on the subject. At heart, they do still love each other, but the beginning demonstrates that they each have their own respective flaws and have to take it into account if they’re going to make their marriage work.

The segment introduces both Mama Cosma and Cupid, both of which are very entertaining in their own right. Mama Cosma has a bitter resentment towards Wanda for taking her son away from her grasp, and while she may play herself off as being sweet and innocent, there are flashes where she can just barely contain her anger towards her. The end result is the kind of deceptively kind antagonist that you love to hate.

As for Cupid, while he doesn’t get as much screentime, he still manages to stand out. With him being such a romance-focused character, the idea of portraying him as a femboy is pretty damn clever, and he’s just so damn fab. Tom Kenny plays the part great, and the fact that Cupid is just corrupt enough to be willing to accept bribery is quite the funny cherry on top.

Anyway, back to Cosmo and Wanda. While they do have their moment to bicker, I love that the segment manages to get it done fairly quickly, all thanks to Timmy being a hell of a wingman for the both of them. This segment portrays Timmy at some of his best so far, going to great lengths to make Cosmo and Wanda reconcile and make them both see the error of their ways.

While the fairy dating game show idea is pretty fun on its own, what stands out to me is how Cosmo and Wanda are written during it. As the sequence progresses, Cosmo manages to figure out that he did make a mistake regarding their anniversary, Wanda realizes she was being too harsh, and their warming up and eventual apologizing feel organic and natural with how it all progresses.

The segment is a testament to how strong a relationship Cosmo and Wanda have. Despite any flaws they have and need to work on, they still love each other regardless, and the segment demonstrates it with strong writing, solid character development, and very good comedy on top of that. It’s one of the best so far for sure.
