AFORS: S2 E1a “Boys in the Band”

Now that we‘re officially starting season 2, I’m happy to report that it starts off very well. I hesitate to say it’s one of the show’s best so far, but what it does right is very noteworthy regardless.

This segment is the first appearance of teen singing sensation Chip Skylark, and I have to say I love what they did with this character. Most stories that feature meeting a celebrity IRL take the route of that celebrity being a terrible person, thus resulting in the classic “don’t meet your heroes” lesson. And while I love that kind of story as much as everyone else, having one that doesn’t go that route is honestly kind of refreshing.

Chip may be a celebrity, but he’s not the type of person to let the fame go to his head. His primary concern is possibly upsetting his fans and disappointing them in any way. Hell, the very idea that his fans being angry was his fault is enough to literally make him turn ugly. He’s much more likable than you would expect as a result, and I really appreciate the segment acknowledging that some celebrities can just be good people.

Speaking of Chip, his dynamic with both Timmy and Vicky are both great as well. Timmy initially sees Chip as an up-his-own-ass celebrity that needs to be punished, but once he realizes what a jerk he’s been in wishing it to happen, he naturally comes to discover that Chip really isn’t a bad guy at all. It’s pretty heartwarming seeing him come around to the guy, and it makes their singing together at the end all the more satisfying.

As for Vicky, she’s basically the obsessed fan cranked up to 11, kidnapping Chip and keeping him captive while forcing him to marry her. Seeing the normally angry and evil Vicky be so lovey-dovey with him is quite funny in and of itself, and the reveal towards the end that she only loved him for his money both makes it even funnier and is in keeping with her character. Of course she would think about the money first and foremost; the idea that she would be getting a hot guy was just an unnecessary bonus for her. That’s just hilarious.

You also have to talk about the iconic “Icky Vicky” song that caps the whole story off. Timmy and Chip ending the segment on good terms, Chip actually making a song out of Timmy’s statement serving as a great payoff, the song itself is very good, and Vicky herself angry over the song and destroying the TB only for the concert to still be playing; oh, it’s so damn good. It’s an excellent capper to the segment, for sure.

Yeah, this one is damn good, and a very nice one to start the season with. It’s a breath of fresh air when it comes to how it treats celebrities, it‘s consistently funny, and the song that finishes it off is great. No real complaints here.
