Well, I don’t know about the show as a whole as of yet, but as for this episode, yeah, it’s really bad.
Like the previous episode, Clay Jensen is given very little to do outside of listening to the tape and having brief interactions with Hannah during flashbacks. By this point, he’s more of an impartial observer in the present day, and in the flashbacks, his conversations with Hannah only serve to make Hannah herself even more unlikable.
As for the flashbacks, the episode shows the close friendship Hannah had with a girl named Jessica Davis and a newcomer to town named Alex Standall. They go to the cafe together, get to vent over the stress of school and home life, and generally have a good time together. That is, until both her friends stop coming, and as soon as Hannah finds out that it’s because they’re dating, she gets jealous, and through a fake letter tricking her and Jessica, they break off their friendship.
At least, that’s the version we get at first. It’s not until towards the end that it’s revealed that Hannah was the one who left the friend group first for…undisclosed reason as of now. So yeah, as it turns out, the tapes involving her telling the truth about why she decided to off herself contained a lie, and I wouldn’t be surprised if there are more later on. I have no idea why the story is going out of its way to make the suicide victim unlikable, but needless to say, it makes the situation that much more in bad taste.
It also doesn’t help that the dialogue is so agonizingly corny. Despite this story trying to be very down-to-earth involving such a serious subject, you’d think they’d write these teenagers better. I don’t want everyone to be perpetual sad sacks, don’t get me wrong, but…maybe have them feel more realistic.
If episode 1 didn’t showcase a lot of promise, episode 2 certainly didn’t help matters. The problems with the previous one were just made even worse now, and my only hope is that it at least improves a little bit next time.
