“SvTFoE” and its Fall From Grace: S1 E2a: “Matchmaker”

‘Matchmaker’ is…fine. It’s certainly got the occasional great moment or solid joke, but the story as a whole is a bit of a mess.

In an effort to turn her F- into an A+, Star decides to help her teacher Ms. Skullnick find a soulmate, and in the process, she turns her into a troll. A pretty funny idea with some potential for heartfelt moments, I’ll admit. But a lot of the comedy here is pretty lackluster with some notable exceptions. The reveal that Star’s mirror actually works like a cell phone with Siri was a clever bit of subversion, and her lovingly saying “Narwhal blast” admittedly gets a good laugh out of me every time.

But that’s honestly where my biggest compliments end. The plot is very clumsy, plagued by padding the runtime and a bit of a lack of focus. As entertaining as the fight against Ludo is, he really isn’t necessary for the plot. It does lead to Skullnick finding a potential love interest, but that romance gets thrown out the window at the end. As such, aside from the teacher getting turned into a troll, nothing of note really…happens here. Hell, Ms. Skullnick is still a troll by the end, which as far as I recall doesn’t actually get fixed ever. So by the end, I just find myself asking “What was the point of this?”

Sure, ‘Party with a Pony’ was far from perfect in the story department, but at least that had a clear character arc and visually impressive locations that they visit. For the most part here, we’re stuck in Star’s room or their backyard, so it’s not even that much to look at. A bit of a dud segment, all things considered, but to be fair, it could have been worse.
